The black heart of the Tosca

Tosca’s heart is not singing. And even the perverse interplay between gender, religion and art. The pulsating center of Puccini’s drama is the sound: the sound of the black lower strings, the tone leaden woods, the funeral solid brass. He tried at every step Antonio Pirolli, on the podium of the Marche Philharmonic, to extract from the score darker veins, the most gloomy shadows. I have followed only partially the three protagonists (Dimitra Theodossiou, Alejandro Roy and Thomas Hall), correct vocally, but weighed down by ineradicable quirks realist. Black and ceremonial funeral and marble, however, is the scenic machine built by Massimo Gasparon: church, prison and palace which enclose behind their grilles the song without singing of ‘”artist” Floria Tosca.
