ABBIATI AWARD

Established by Italy’s National Association of Music Critics in 1980, the “Franco Abbiati Prize” is the most prestigious award presented annually in Italy in the field of music. Named after the renowned musicologist and critic who wrote for Corriere della Sera for forty years, the award celebrates great artists who elevate Italy’s cultural life.

In 2011 the Pergolesi Spontini Foundation won the XXXI music critics “Franco Abbiati Prize”. This was a Special Award conferred for the entire project of the Pergolesi Celebrations, commencing in Jesi in 2009 and continuing until 2011 with the presentation of all the operas composed by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.

The award was bestowed for the following reasons: “Per l’audace progetto di esecuzione dell’opera omnia iniziato nel 2009 e caparbiamente concluso, nonostante le drastiche e imprevedibili riduzioni dei finanziamenti pubblici, con una serie di produzioni operistiche e concertistiche di qualità musicale, chiamando a collaborare voci, concertatori e complessi strumentali italiani di significativa competenza stilistica e proprietà interpretativa, e proponendo letture sceniche non scontate”.

In 2012, the XXXII Award’s jury of music critics, comprising famous and influential national journalists, honored two artists for two productions which were staged at the Pergolesi Theatre in Jesi:

The staging of “Macbeth”, organized by the Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini and directed by Henning Brockhaus, debuted in the traditional Opera Season of the Pergolesi Theatre of Jesi in November of 2012.

Leo Muscato won the Abbiati Award for direction, namely opera productions including La Fuga in maschera, “rarità di Spontini” in cui “ha giocato con leggerezza nel clima della commedia buffa”.

The first performance in modern times of a Spontini work was presented in September 2012 at the Pergolesi Theatre in Jesi during the Pergolesi Spontini Festival in a new co-production between the Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini and the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
